With the warm weather upon us, the outdoors calls us to enjoy our porches and patios like no other time of the year.
More and more of us are yearning to transform our outdoor spaces into something beautiful as we invite our families and friends to connect with us beyond our cell phones.
The country as a whole is looking for ways to get back in touch with our neighbors, and there’s no better way to do that than extending a warm welcome starting on your front porch.
As many of us are looking for ways to experience life more deeply, the pure pleasure of porch sitting is making a huge comeback. If your porch is looking a little less inviting here are some simple, cost-effective ways to transform your outdoor space into something beautiful to enjoy.
Give Old Furniture New Life
Updating your outdoor space doesn’t need to be expensive. Take a walk through a flea market, second-hand store or even your attic and look for pieces that can be repurposed. Don’t just limit yourself to outdoor furniture. Get creative and turn an old dresser into a drink bar, an antique table into an outdoor dining table and keep an eye out for attractive containers that can be used for planters.
Finds you would usually pass up for the interior of your home could be the perfect addition to an outdoor living area. A fresh coat of paint can make that flea market find your perfect summer treasure.
Take a walk through your garden and put color into your sitting area with cut flowers. Flowers and porches go together especially if you don’t like to keep up with the mess potted flowers can leave.
Coordinate your flower choices with your porch pillows and other accent pieces for a pulled together look.
Mason jars make for a simple solution to cut flowers especially if a baseball from a neighborhood game ends up on your porch.
No Green Thumb?
Easy to grow evergreens such as boxwoods make a perfect solution when adding plants to your outdoor space. A row of evergreens planted at the edge of a porch or in classy pots adds lush greenery that can also double as a privacy screen. Adding pots of green will give your seating area a fresh and calming effect.
It Doesn’t Have to Match
Add interest by mixing colors, shapes, and sizes of your planters. The clue is to keep them all in a general color family to create a cohesive look. Groupings in three always look best.
Go Bold & Bright
Give your porch personality by choosing bold and bright colors. Mix similar shades with contrasting complimentary colors. Add accent colors with cushions and pillows to pull the look all together.
Add Lots of Pillows
There’s no other element of decorating a porch that has more appeal than pillows. Choose outdoor fabrics in cheery coordinating colors that invite your guest to relax and unwind. Pillows will pull all your furniture and accessories together into one cohesive decorating theme. As in the picture above you can really have fun with colorful pillows if your furniture and space is neutral. It’s a perfect backdrop that allows you to change out your colors to match the season.
Rugs Are Not Just for Indoors
During the warmer weather, we tend to use our outdoor spaces more as an extension of our inside living areas so we might as well make them as homey as possible. Just as an area rug completes our inside rooms, a rug can add a sense of completion to our outdoor spaces as well. Outdoor rugs are typically water and mold resistant. We know they can be costly so if money’s tight buy two smaller rugs and put them together.
Light Your World
Here in the south, we tend to use our porches and patios more in the evening after the sun has gone down, so it’s important that our lighting sets the mood with useful illumination.
There are so many wonderful ways to light your area.
- String up twinkling lights to add a romantic effect.
- Battery operated candles can make a dramatic statement when clustered
- A few glowing lanterns can make any summer evening special.
Now that your outdoor space is all pretty sit back and enjoy it. Invite your friends over for an impromptu meal. A glass of wine with cheese and crackers is as fancy as you need to get as long as your porch is inviting and comfortable.
